Sterling Dovetail Rule-2 – for Starrett 4″ Squares
Since May 2015 at Handworks 2015 where I introduced the Sterling Dovetail Square, I have been asked if the Dovetail Blade will fit in the Starrett 4inch Square. For unknown reasons Starrett makes thier 4″ squares with blades that are .018″ thinner than virtually every other square maker.
I have been keeping a tally of how many people wanted Dovetail Rules for their Starrett squares I completed a run of DTR-2 units specially designed for 4 inch Starrett Squares for Handworks 2017. Note that the DTR-2 will fit Starrett 4″ Double squares and 4″ Combination Squares. The dimensions of the Sterling Dovetail Rule DTR-2 are: 4″ long, by .300″ tall on the taller end, .90″ on the smaller end and .064″ thick!
You can purchase the DTR-2 here
Sterling Precision Protractor
This precision protractor uses an etched ruler as the angle beam providing so much more functionality in a precision protractor. Made of tempered steel, the head is satin chrome plated and the etchings black filled for supreme contrast that is easy on the eyes and increases accuracy.
The protractor comes with a 6″ rule that is tempered steel and has English Metric graduations; English graduations are in 32nd’s and Metric are in mm.
You can add an optional 12″ rule that is tempered steel and has English Metric graduations; English graduations are in 32nd’s and Metric are in mm. This 12″ rule can be very useful when longer layouts are required.
The Protractor can be used as a depth gauge with both the 6″ and 12″ ruler making this an extremely versatile tool!
Either rule can slide within the captive nut to extend to what ever length is needed, this makes this protractor infinitely more usable than the fixed arm protractors from other makers.
Sterling Combination Square Rulers
I am proud to announce that Sterling Tool Works is now offering replacement Rules for Most standard combination squares. Many owners have combination squares, they are usually second hand or heirlooms that have been passed down in the family. In many instances the rules are corroded and treatments to removed the rust leave them shiny and more difficult to read. Sterling Tool Works is now offering Premium replacement rules that are precision made in the USA. The rules are chemically etched, etchings blackened, tempered and satin chrome plated for excellent resolution that is easy on the eyes.
A 24″ rule can be extremely useful for larger tasks in the shop, but the cost (usually$125+ each) is usually prohibitive. Our introductory price is $40 for the 12″ and $80 for the 24″. These rules are a TREMENDOUS value at this introductory price. Give your vintage Combination Square an upgrade with a new rule! Available in 4R graduations; 64th, 32nd, 16th and 8th.
Sterling Roubo Curves™
Roubo curves are french curves on steroids, the largest curve in the three piece set is 18 inches long! This set is scaled to a perfect size for full scale work. The set is made from 304 Stainless Steel precision cut with a laser and tumbled in media to debur all the flash and give a nice matte finish. This will be the most durable set of curves you ever own. Bring some beautiful curves into your next project!
Sterling Tool Works Double Square
This precision double square is supplied with one traditional graduated rule and a dovetailing rule providing a very versatile tool with many uses. The standard rule provides a wonderful compact square with excellent accuracy rivaling common machinist square accuracies of .001” per inch, per U.S. federal standard: GGG-S-656E. Available with either a 4″ or 6″ precision etched rule with chrome satin finish with blackened etches that is easy on your eyes for excellent contrast and improved accuracy.
The included Sterling “Dovetailing Blade” is an incredibly handy ruler for checking the squareness of your dovetails to ensure excellent fit and “gap less” joints after assembly. The reduced size of one end of the un-graduated rule allows precise checking of squareness in even some of the tightest “London style” dovetails. Regular size rules simply cannot reach into the spaces the Sterling Dovetailing Ruler can. The Dovetailing Rule is hardened, precision ground and finished with the same satin Chrome finish as the standard rule.
The powder coated square casting provides the accuracy required but avoids the stock-heavy feel of a solid machinist’s square, providing excellent balance and feel. Rules lock securely in any position from full left to full right with the tightening of the knurled thumbscrew.
The Sterling Double Square is available with these precision etched rules:
4” Length with English/Metric graduations = .5mm, 1mm, 32nds, 64ths
4” Length with 4R graduations = 8ths, 16ths, 32nds, 64ths
6” Length with English/Metric graduations = .5mm, 1mm, 32nds, 64ths
6” Length with 4R graduations = 8ths, 16ths, 32nds, 64ths
Superior quality – Made in USA.
The Sterling Dovetailing Rule is also available separately without the double square. I cannot guarantee that the Dovetailing Rule will fit ALL other makers squares but I have tried a handful of other makers 6” combination squares I had on hand such as Starrett, Goddell Pratt, Brown and Sharpe and the dovetailing rule clamped perfectly in both vintage and contemporary squares.
The Sterling Plane Hammer design is finalized and the initial 3 short production runs have been sold out. Here is a picture of the first 5 units nearly complete, pricing has been finalized at $135 each and includes one spare “spud” click the plane hammer tab above for more information.
The latest accessory from Sterling Tool Works is the Saddle-Sling, a convenient holster to store your Saddle-Tail units in your tool chest or workshop. Designed to be screwed onto a vertical surface, your fingers wrap easily around the steel head of the Saddle-Tail to quickly lift the unit out to use. This also provides more area below available in your tool chest for other items.
The Saddle-Sling is a collaboration with a Friend of mine, Jason Thigpen at Texas Heritage Wood Works: www.txheritage.net. He is a fine craftsman making incredible custom canvas aprons and other leather goods! Each Saddle-Sling is made by hand with hand swaged rivets and grommets. Saddle-Slings are available in Single, Dual and Triple position configurations for those that have the full suite of Saddle-Tail units. Saddle-Slings are priced $20, 27.50 and $35 respectively and come with brass #5 slotted wood screws for installation.
Sterling Tool Works is proud to present our newest tools the Saddle-Tail2. The ST2 retains all of the best features of the original Saddle-Tail: Beautiful workmanship, two in one tool design: Dovetail Marker and Saddle Square, Durable materials, and incredible balance & ergonomics. Those woodworkers who exclusively use mechanical pencils will likely prefer the ST2 over the original Saddle-Tail as there are no reliefs or chamfers that can cause offsets when marking with a fine tip mechanical pencil.
The ST2 was designed for a lower price point, it doesn’t have some of the features original Saddle-Tail has but allows me to offer this tool at a lower price:
1) No inside corner reliefs: This is a lot of additional machining to make. Your boards will need to be squared up. However most skilled craftsmen will tell you that your boards should be square and true prior to laying out your joinery. NOTE: woodworkers who exclusively use mechanical pencils will likely prefer the ST2 over the Saddle-Tail as there are no reliefs or chamfers that can cause offsets when marking with a fine tip mechanical pencil.
2) The steel head and brass handle are joined by hardened steel pins pressed into the two pieces: This allows for less machining; drilling, countersink, taping and less handwork installing screws.
3) The handle retains the classic machined flute for ergonomic handling; however the edges of the handle have been eased with a file instead of chamfer milled: This eliminated more machining.
The Saddle-Tail-2 is still a premium layout tool being both a dovetail marker and saddle square IN ONE SINGLE TOOL but is more economically priced. The price for the ST-2 is $65 each.
The Wait is Over! Sterling Tool Works presents two NEW Saddle-Tail units with Slopes of 1:6 and 1:8 to accompany the original 1:4 Slope Saddle-Tail – February 1st, 2014
